Police round up 479 suspects for drug
Police said Tuesday that they have rounded up a total of 479 suspects in a special crackdown on drug-related crimes over recent months.
The Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency said of that total, 122 were apprehended while another 356 were booked without physical detention during a crackdown that ran from November last year until Feb. 15.
Among the suspects, 310 were arrested for either selling or using methamphetamine; 80 for illegally purchasing narcotics or medicines, including sleeping pills; 36 were medical professionals arrested for poor management of drugs; and 29 were arrested for trafficking marijuana.
In terms of occupations, most of the suspects were unemployed at 201, followed by 40 company employees, 37 daily workers, and 39 medical personnel, including doctors and nurses.
By age, most of the arrested were in their 40s at 196, while those in their 50s and 30s made up 103 and 95 of the arrests, respectively. Twenty people were in their 20s while two teens were arrested, as well as 10 people in their 60s, according to police.
A police officer said drug trafficking is gradually spreading to the general public from a specific group of people, adding it will continue its sweeping crackdown on narcotic trafficking on the Internet.
Gyeonggi police also said it rounded up a total of 2,107 drug-related offenders last year, a rapid increase from 1,201 in 2014. (Yonhap)
