In just a few days, Lunar New Year celebrations will begin around the world. One of the most important holidays in China and other East Asian countries, it marks the start of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. In the Chinese zodiac, an animal (one of 12) and an element (one of five) are assigned to each year—2024 will be the Year of the Wood Dragon.

Dragons are deeply embedded in human mythology around the world and across cultures. The Chinese dragon, or loong, is a symbol of power and good fortune. In Greek mythology, dragons were often depicted with multiple heads, like the hydra slain by the hero Heracles. Depending on who you ask, dragons could be wise, ancient, and benevolent, or they may be malevolent monsters that spit fire and poison. All of these different versions make up the rich tapestry of these legendary creatures.

From a massive metal sculpture that breathes real fire to a neon dragon that you might recognize from Blade Runner, these are a few of our favorite places with a connection to dragons.
